The official launch of the next major version of Android is still a few months away, but leaks are already painting a clear picture. Recent reports that surfaced from an internal version of AOSP OEM suggest that Google is finally focusing on privacy and visual refinement.
The biggest highlight? A native app lock feature is finally coming to stock Android. While this is groundbreaking for Pixel users, those familiar with the Xiaomi HyperOS ecosystem may experience a sense of déjà vu. Here’s what we know so far about Android 17.
TL;DR
- App Lock is finally coming natively to Android 17, allowing users to restrict access to specific apps directly from the launcher.
- Screen recording receives a user interface overhaul, bringing tablet-style controls to smartphone screens.
- The visual changes include new translucent volume bars that mimic a “liquid glass” aesthetic.
- Xiaomi users have enjoyed similar features for over 10 years; therefore, they can say they were ahead of the curve.
Native app blocking: better late than never?
For a long time, standard Android users have relied on third-party apps to lock down their sensitive applications. However, it seems that Android 17 will bring a much-needed feature to Android devices.
Based on the leaks we’ve seen so far, it appears a new option will be available in the context menu. If you long-press an app icon, a “Lock app” option will appear in the context menu. This option will allow you to lock the app using your fingerprint or PIN code.
I find it interesting to see how Google decided to highlight this feature in Android 17. As a long-time Xiaomi user , I can say that I’ve been enjoying this feature for quite some time now. App Lock has been part of the MIUI experience since its inception.
How will it work?
Based on the screenshots we’ve seen so far, it appears the feature will work as follows: as soon as you lock an app, a message will appear on the lock screen.
Additionally, we saw some code hints indicating that notification content will not appear when an app is blocked. This feature will ensure that sensitive content is not displayed in the status bar.
Xiaomi’s advantage
While it’s always great to see these features included in the Android operating system, we’re already way ahead with our security app on Xiaomi HyperOS . So, if you’re already a proud owner of a Xiaomi device, you don’t need to wait any longer for the release of Android 17.
What comes next?
It’s still too early to say exactly what the final features will be with the release of Android 17. Currently, features are undergoing internal testing. However, one thing is certain: Google is focusing on privacy and user experience. We will continue to delve into the code to discover what other “borrowed” features are being included in the release.
